I am bemused at your inclusion of Osho in a list of Mahan Atmans! That’s quite rich. As rich as having the largest fleet of Rolls Royce in the world. But the cars were owned by his followers; he merely enjoyed them and encouraged increasing their numbers. In his own words, “they love me so much that they are trying to have three hundred and sixty-five Rolls Royces, one for every day. And I say, ‘Why not? A great idea!’”; and “I am the poorest man in the whole world, living the richest life possible.” He lived a life of obscenely ostentatious opulence whilst his followers, most of whom had donated all or most of their money and possessions to his commune, had been manipulated into a red or white robed, basic existence. Does this qualify him for your criteria of “Simplicity – A plate and a bed, living in a temple”??

The early therapy groups in his ashram featured repeated sexual encounters between participants and physical aggression and violence until, in January 1979 an official ashram press release announced that violence “had fulfilled its function” - a far cry from the non violence espoused in your article. Through his godly career, he gave discourses on sex, multiple organisms and on the uniqueness of the word “f**k”. Which of your Mahan Atman attributes does this qualify him for? ‘Playfullness’ or ‘Persistence’?

What about being indicted on 35 counts in Oregon including immigration violations and lieing on his visa application, then agreeing to pay US$400,000 in fines before being deported back to India? Wouldn’t that be contrary to that most basic of Mahan Atman traits – integrity? Not to mention being arrested in Crete, refused entry into Switzerland, Germany, Great Britain and Canada and ‘invited to leave’ from Uruguay and Jamaica? A Mahan Atman?

It is factually incorrect to say Anna Hazare, as one of your Mahan Atmas, practices non-violence. He is far from having "professed that he would rather die than have even one iota of physical violence committed against another human being.”

He is on record as having practiced and advocated flogging to cure alcoholism!

In his village of Ralegan Siddhi, villagers who were found to be drunk were tied to pillars and flogged, sometimes by Anna Hazare personally. He has justified this by saying that “rural India was a harsh society” and comparing it to a mother administering bitter medicine to her sick child because the medicine will cure her child.

He is on record advocating that alcoholics (after being given three warnings) should be flogged and shamed in public. That’s what the Taliban did to those who did not adhere to Sharia law.

This is not an attack on or a criticism of Anna Hazare or your blog, which I admire – it is only a factual response to your attributing him with Mahan Atmanesque non violence.

I too wish I could have been comprehensive, I was working against two factors.

(1) I needed feedback and not enough people were fast enough to give the same.

(2) There was no time to really lock down the nitty gritty since deadline is only 2 days away. I had to make it easy for people to fill the form. I have tried to give an other options wherever it was possible with a text box for people to offer a new choice.

Thank you again for your support ad would request you get everyone else to try and fill in the form too.

We need as many numbers as possible to make this happen.

i support your commendable efforts! i have filled and submitted the form to the Standing Committee. the form could have been more nuanced for excample having CBI and CVC as inependent but under the broad supervision of LokPal. (see LokSatta/FDR stance on this for example) www.loksatta.org

Hi Indi,
I have been a follower of your blog for some time now, and respect your PoV on things. Today, we are having a meeting/march in Paris at 4pm. In preparation for that, I was reading up on the Lokpal bill, the Jan Lokpal bill, and the proposal made by the NCPRI (the folks who brought us the RTI act).

I thought the following articles might be of interest to you too. What is your take on the NCPRI proposals, and especially their claim that although team Anna has asked for proposals/feedback, they are not willing to change the core structure of their bill [see Tehalka interviews linked below]?

In my view i think a bill should be passed such that whoever does corruption should be put to jail for life ,AND his property be seized with the money he has stolen .This money can be put to much better use if it comes in the hands of someone with a vision.

There are a some more Why's to which I am looking an answer for?

Why do we hesitate to complain to the authorities? The other day there was a procession celebrating hanuman jayanti, bursting crackers of those rocket types. The police was present for bandobast for the procession. Once such type of cracker hit an overhead wire and burst there itself sending showers of flames down on people. I was the only one to complain to the police and then they did not allow further crackers. Had I not complained, they would not have really bothered.

Why do we hesitate to help somebody?
For example travelling in a local train, once we get a seat, we don't really bother to get up for elderly people. We don't get up after say 15mins to allow the other person to sit for the next 15 mins. In buses, a female has to ask a male out of the seat reserved for her. If she doesn't ask, no one bothers, why? Why don't we share our cars, or even autos and taxis.

Why do we eat at places where children work? Why do we eat at places which are not legal and then say that the footpaths are blocked?

Why do we give money to beggers knowing pretty well that it is a racket which uses even small children to get the money?

Why don't we ever ask a local political worker to hold weekly public meetings in his area?

Why do we just have questions? Why do we never want to be a part of the solution?
